MYTHS ABOUT DAILY CARE FOR A WESTIE...
#1 Westies should not be bathed – FALSE
We all dream of a dog with well-groomed, thick, and healthy fur. How can you achieve such fur? Bathe, bathe, and bathe again! Healthy and thick fur is clean fur – this is one of the most important rules we need to remember.
How do we take care of our dog's coat between shows? Keep it clean, moisturize, nourish, and regenerate!
Most breeds, including the West Highland White Terrier, require frequent grooming, not just the day before a show. We should not allow our dog to become dirty and matted because such fur will break, and we will never achieve the desired effect. Mud and other debris from walks often crumble off, yes, but they crumble off along with the fur! Show cosmetics are not helpful either. Chalk and various sprays dry out the coat and can also contribute to hair breakage.
So, what should you do?
First, clean thoroughly. For this step of grooming, the Basic Deep Clean Deep Cleansing Shampoo is reliable. It not only helps to remove all impurities and cosmetic products but also prepares the coat for further care.
Second, moisturize and protect. Botaniqa Activ Line Shampoo and Mask help protect the coat from matting and rebuild it without softening it.
#2 You should brush your dog before bathing – FALSE
You should not brush your dog before bathing. If you do and listen closely, you can hear the fur breaking!
If you follow the rules described above, your dog will never have mats that you won't be able to handle after a bath.
First, bathe the dog, then blow off excess water, and then proceed to proper drying using a brush. This way, the coat remains straight, well-styled, and free of mats and tangles.
If, however, you find yourself with a dog whose coat is matted and tangled, and you're worried that bathing will only make it worse, it’s worth using the Botaniqa Tangle Free Spray, which was specifically designed to detangle matted and knotted fur.
We should remember to bathe our Westie after every show and in between, especially if we want their coat to be thicker and healthier.
